World Happiness Report: what are the effects?

Happy

The World Happiness Report, a renowned publication of United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, contains the articles and rankings of national happiness. Surveys are conducted on respondents from around the world annually.

The happiness scores and rankings use data from the Gallup World Poll. The main variable is the Ladder Score, where respondents are asked to rate their own current lives from 0 to 10. Then, the average Ladder Score of the country will be computed based on how the respondents rated on average. The higher the score, the happier the country is.

Aside from the Ladder Score, respondents are surveyed on other questions as well:

  1. Social Support : “If you were in trouble, do you have relatives or friends you can count on to help you whenever you need them, or not?” (Yes or No)
  2. Freedom to make life choices : “Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your freedom to choose what you do with your life?” (Yes or No)
  3. Generosity : “Have you donated money to a charity in the past month?” (Yes or No)
  4. Perceptions of Corruption: “Is corruption widespread throughout the government or not” & “Is corruption widespread within businesses or not?” (Yes or No)

Within the World Happiness Report dataset, logged GDP per capita and Average Healthy Life Expectancy have been populated for each of the countries involved.
